Introduction to Kayaking

Hello and thanks for coming to Hopp Outdoors.  My name is Bert Hopp.  I've been paddling ever since I can remember.  It started with canoes while living on the Huron River.  About eight years ago I got a job at an outdoor retail store and purchased my first kayak.  Within a year I started helping out with kayak classes at Schoolcraft College and did my first open water crossing in six to eight foot waves, fifteen to twenty knot winds with no visible sight of land.  Now I was hooked on the Great Lakes.  Since that maiden voyage I've done many trips all over the Great Lakes.  After a few years I started working at a kayak specialty shop that had a great B. C. U. (British Canoe Union) kayak instructional program.  The B. C. U. is the most well known and most thorough kayak organization in the world.  After a year or so I became the Instructional Program Coordinator and Retail Manager.  Within two years I was asked by the store I originally worked at to come back and start a kayak instructional program, so I did.  Although the store is not there now the kayak school was a great success and I learned a lot from it and decided to start my own program.  I am also a manufacturers representative for Deuter USA (backpacks) and other outdoor specialty products (all are on the links page).

I would like to thank Bob F. for being my business consultant, my mentor and dear friend, Eric H. for being my web consultant,  Betsy S. for graphic designs, my Mom (Hi Mom), Brent H. for leading me to Christ and for being my best (guy) friend,  Sweet Karyn, my wife and best friend, for being so supportive of everything I do, You are the sea upon which I sail,  and God, the Rock upon which I stand and through Whom all things are possible.
